The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) offers a 5 year postgraduate training program in psychiatry. The Queensland Branch Training Committee (QBTC) and the office of Postgraduate Training in Psychiatry for Queensland Psychiatry Trainees (PGT) oversees the RANZCP Training Program in Queensland.

Eligibility
To apply for an accredited psychiatry registrar position through the RMO campaign you need to be either a:
- current Queensland RANZCP trainee
- current non-Queensland RANZCP trainee (transfer applicant)
- new applicant for the RANZCP training program.
Current Queensland RANZCP trainees
Before you apply for a position through the RMO campaign, there are a couple of things you may need to do or check.
- Determine if a position is suitable
Talk to the clinical director or chief training supervisor at your preferred training site. They’ll let you know if it’s the right position for your stage of training and personal circumstances. The QLD clinical directors list [PDF 637.83 KB] has the name and contact details for each training site. - Check the position is accredited if you’re doing a Stage 3 advanced certificate.
If you’re intending to complete a stage 3 advanced certificate in the application year, make sure the positions you’re applying for are accredited for the advanced certificate. You can check this with the relevant Director of Advanced Training (DOAT). RANZCP trainees applying to transfer to Queensland
Before you apply to transfer into the Queensland Psychiatry training program from another RANZCP program, there are a few things you may need to do or check.
- Hold general medical registration.
You must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
- Determine if a position is suitable
Talk to the clinical director at your preferred training site about any vacancies. They’ll let you know if a position is right for your stage of training and personal circumstances. You must apply to the Queensland Psychiatry Training Program. You will need to follow the required transfer application process, which includes providing contact details for three (3) referees who will need to upload referee reports. The Queensland Postgraduate Training in Psychiatry Office can help guide you through the application process. You can contact them by phone 07 3156 9885 or email PGT.PAH@health.qld.gov.au. - Contact the director of advanced training.
If you’re doing an advanced training certificate, you may need to talk to the relevant director of advanced training.
New RANZCP training applicants
The requirements needed to apply for our training course have changed.
Before you apply for the 2025 Queensland Psychiatry Training Program, there are a few things you may need to do or check.
- Prevocational medical training
You must have a minimum of 2 years FTE (full time equivalent) in prevocational medical training after your medical degree. - NFPMT Certificate of Completion
If you were trained in Australia and completed your medical degree from 2023 onwards (current PGY1 in 2024, applying for RANZCP training in 2026), you’re expected to hold the NFPMT Certificate of Completion. - Determine if a position is suitable
Talk to the clinical director at your preferred training sites about any vacancies. They’ll let you know if the position is right for stage 1 training. Before you can proceed to a selection interview for RANZCP in Queensland, you must have an offer of appointment to an accredited training post if you’re successful in the RANZCP training selection process. - Apply for the Queensland Psychiatry Training Program
You must apply to the Queensland Psychiatry Training Program. You will need to follow the required application process, which includes providing contact details for three (3) referees who will need to upload referee reports. There is also a selection interview that is an independent process to that of securing employment in a registrar position through the RMO campaign.
