The training is a centralised statewide recruitment process. Heads of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and Directors of Advanced Training at Queensland hospitals accredited for advanced training support the training.
As a Sleep Medicine Advanced Trainee, you’ll be a trainee registrar of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). You’ll provide inpatient and outpatient medical services within the Department of Sleep Medicine and a consultation service to other departments.
As a trainee, it’s intended that you’ll maximise your professional development, with a view to completing specialist training according to the guidelines of the:
It’s also expected that you’ll be involved in the professional development of junior medical staff.
Eligibility
To apply you must:
- have completed at least 2 years of core respiratory medicine training
- hold registration with or be in the process of getting registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
If you’re a non-respiratory medicine trainee, for example in neurology, and you want to do sleep medicine training, there are additional requirements. Please contact the Chair of the Sleep Medicine advanced training panel to discuss your training options.
All applicants must have a sound knowledge of and commitment to the Code of Conduct for the Queensland Public Service (PDF 1481 kB).
Applying
You can apply for the Queensland Sleep Medicine Advanced Training program when you apply to the RMO campaign. Applications for the campaign are open Monday 3 June to Monday 1 July 2024. We won’t accept late applications.
To be eligible for a position you need to provide details for 2 referees and your referees will have to upload reports. If they don’t, you won’t be eligible for a position.

If you’d like to be considered for a Respiratory medicine advanced training position if your Sleep medicine application is unsuccessful, at Step 10: preference select:
- 'Sleep Medicine' as your first preference.
- 'Respiratory Medicine' as your second preference.

You can do your Sleep Medicine Advanced Training at the following Queensland hospitals:
- Gold Coast University Hospital
- Princess Alexandra Hospital
- Royal Brisbane and Women′s Hospital
- Sunshine Coast University Hospital
- The Prince Charles Hospital.
Interview, selection and key dates
The recruitment and selection process complies with relevant Queensland Health policies including the principles of equal employment opportunity. The oversight committee reviews all applications to the pathway. The committee uses assessment criteria to determine eligibility and suitability of applicants for appointment to pathway positions within Queensland Health.
The selection process will be a panel interview with the Directors or their delegates of each hospital. Positions are allocated primarily according to ranking based on written application, CV, referee reports, interview, and other mitigating circumstances.
