Palliative Medicine Advanced Training in Queensland offers a unique opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and experience in all facets of contemporary palliative medicine practice. The Selection and processes guidelines [PDF 419.94 KB] document outlines the statewide approach to delivering palliative medicine advanced training in Queensland, specifically the operation of the training program.
Recruitment for Palliative Medicine Advanced Training and the Clinical Foundation in Palliative Medicine in Queensland is centrally coordinated by the Palliative Medicine Training Pathway. A statewide approach to recruitment and rotation, makes sure candidates have access to a rounded and complete training experience.
During your time on the Pathway, you’ll be supported by the fortnightly statewide Queensland Palliative Medicine Education Program [PDF 146.79 KB]. The program covers topics guided by curricula, trainee needs, new developments and is delivered by content experts.
Eligibility
Adult medicine/Paediatrics and child health streams
To apply as a Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) basic trainee you must:
- have completed RACP Basic Training, including Written and Clinical Examinations
- hold a current medical registration
- be eligible for appointment to an appropriate advanced training position.
Adult medicine stream only
If you’re already a Fellow you can apply if you:
- hold a Fellowship from an eligible medical college
- have a current medical registration
- are eligible for appointment to an appropriate advanced training position.
Fellows from all RACP's divisions (AMD and PCHD), faculties (AFOEM, AFPHM and AFRM) and chapters (AChAM, AChPM, AChSHM and CCCH) can apply. You can also apply if you’re a fellow from other medical colleges, including:
- Australasian College for Emergency Medicine
- Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetics
- Faculty of Pain Medicine, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetics
- College of Intensive Care Medicine
- Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine
- Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
- Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

Applying
New and current trainees can apply to the Palliative Medicine Pathway each year through the RMO campaign. When you do, make sure you complete the Palliative Medicine section of the application. Applications for the campaign are open Monday 3 June to Monday 1 July 2024.
To be eligible for a position you need to provide details for 2 referees and your referees will have to upload reports. If they don’t, you won’t be eligible for a position.

Interview and selection
Interview process
All shortlisted advanced trainees will be invited to attend an interview. The interview panel includes a Director or their delegate from each Hospital and Health Service (HHS) or private palliative care service in Queensland.
The panel decides allocation of registrars to their training site rotations at an allocation meeting. All Queensland training sites have active involvement in the recruitment and interview process.
Clinical Foundation in Palliative Medicine applicants aren’t interviewed. They’re selected based on their RMO campaign application.
Selection process
First year positions are allocated primarily according to ranking at interview, CV, cover letter and where possible site preferences. Positions are allocated in order of:
- continuing trainees Year 2 and Year 3 - will have a brief interview before allocation
- first year advanced trainees in palliative medicine
- clinical foundation candidates
- other medical officers.

You can apply for a position when you apply for the RMO campaign. Applications for the campaign are open Monday 3 June to Monday 1 July 2024.

The facility you’re allocated to will arrange your employment contract. Your continuation on the pathway is subject to a satisfactory performance review.
