About the initiative

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander allocation initiative gives intern applicants the opportunity to get their first choice of location for training.

We're committed to growing and supporting the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students and doctors who want to become rural generalists. It’s part of the work Queensland Health is doing to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation in our workforce.

Who can apply

To apply for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rural generalist intern initiative you must be:

  • Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or both
  • accepted as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or both by the community you live in
  • eligible and applying for the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway.

You can still tell us you identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and not apply for the initiative if you wish.

You can’t apply for this initiative if you're applying for special consideration or a joint ticket.

How to apply

You need to tell us you want to apply for the initiative in your internship application.

In the ‘other details’ section at step 3:

  • select ‘Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Intern Allocation Initiative’
  • list the hospital you’d like to work at.

The hospital you choose here needs to match your first choice of hospital in the preferences section of your application.

You’ll also need to give us everything listed in the application information.

When applications close, we’ll contact you to ask for your supporting documents.

Supporting documents

You’ll need to give us a statement explaining why you've chosen your preferred hospital. You should also include either:

Your confirmation of acceptance should come from a community organisation, association or body with a majority of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders in leadership.

All documents need to be certified as copies of the original by either a JP (justice of the peace), commissioner of declaration, barrister, solicitor, or notary public.

Review of application

We review applications and assess them for suitability. You'll be invited to interview if you're eligible. We might contact you if we need more information to help with this process.

The panel includes representatives from the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway and an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander rural generalist doctor.

Allocation

If your application is successful, we'll offer you a position on the pathway. If you accept, you'll be allocated your first choice of location.  If lots of interns on the initiative have the same first choice, we sometimes need to give people their next available choice. If this happens, we use a ballot system to allocate the places. We only include interns that are part of the initiative in the ballot.
