Intern recruitment

Applications for the 2025 Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway have closed. You can apply for an internship through our online portal when applications open next year.

The Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway provides support for doctors to attain Rural Generalist status in Queensland and our applicants go on to attain:

  • Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM) including completion of advanced skills training in one of the College’s specified disciplines; and/or
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP-RG) including completion of advanced skills training in one of the College’s specified disciplines.

Both Fellowships allow Fellows to work unsupervised in general practice anywhere in Australia as they attain recognition as a general practitioner for Medicare purposes. The end of the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway is just the beginning of a varied and fulfilling career; explore more about which option to choose on the ACRRM or RACGP websites.

Recruitment Process

Final year medical students apply for a Rural Generalist intern position via an open merit application and interview process conducted by the QRGP team in advance of Queensland Health’s general intern ballot.

Applicants successful at interview participate in the Rural Generalist Intern live preferencing process to list Rural Generalist Training Hospitals in order of preference. Where a hospital is oversubscribed at the close of live preferencing, a ballot ensues (refer to the Rural Generalist Intern placement preferencing and balloting guide).

Rural Generalist Trainees are notified of the outcome of the Rural Generalist Intern Ballot on the same day that all Queensland Group A general interns receive their offer.

View the intern placement flowchart for more information on the process.
