We are committed to growing and supporting the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors with advanced skills training (AST).
If you're an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicant, you can apply for a position through our AST initiative. If you're successful, we'll recommend you for a position at your first preferenced hospital.
To apply you need to be either:
- Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, or both
- accepted as Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or both by the community you live in.
You'll also need to meet our requirements during the selection process.
Supporting documents
You’ll need to supply supporting documents along with others outlined in our application information, including:
- a signed statutory declaration [DOCX 245.32 KB]
- confirmation of acceptance by the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community you live in.
Confirmation of acceptance should come from an incorporated community organisation, association or body that exists when you apply. It must have a majority of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples in leadership.
You can use an original or notarised copy of a letter of confirmation [DOCX 248.75 KB] or a confirmation you have from another organisation.
You’ll also need to provide a statement telling us why you want to work at a particular hospital.
You must get all documents certified as copies of the original by a JP (justice of the peace), commissioner of declaration or solicitor.
How to apply
You need to apply through the online portal. We only accept applications during the campaign dates.
In the Queensland Rural Advanced Skills Training Pathway section you need to:
- select yes to the question ‘Are you applying for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander AST initiative?’
- choose your preferred training location.
After applications close, you’ll get an email with the due date for supporting documents and how to submit them.
If you’re a QRGP trainee and you’ve already supplied these documents, you won’t have to give them to us again.

Review and selection
A panel will review your application and supporting documents. They'll contact you if they need more information.
If we have more applicants than positions for a location, we'll rank applicants using an order of merit. The director of the hospital will decide who to select.
We’ll let you know the outcome of your application when offers are released.
