There are different application times depending on the type of internship you want to do.

Applications for the 2025 Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway will open on Monday 4 March 2024 and close on Monday 18 March 2024.

Applications for the 2025 general intern campaign will open on Monday 6 May 2024 and close on Thursday 6 June 2024.

To apply, you must use the online portal. We only accept applications during the campaign dates.

Queensland Rural Generalist interns

Monday 4 March 2024 9 am (AEST) – applications open.

Monday 18 March 2024 4pm (AEST) – applications close.

Thursday 6 June 2024 3 pm (AEST) - applications close.

Friday 14 June 2024 4 pm (AEST) – group A including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Intern Allocation Initiative applicants to submit supporting documents.

Applying

What you need

Before you apply, you’ll need to get some documents together. These include:

  • your proof of identity
  • your completed criminal history form
  • your completed vaccine preventable diseases form
  • your CV
  • your medical qualification, if you’ve graduated
  • proof of your Medical Board of Australia registration, if you're registered
  • your Australian Medical Council MCQ exam and certificate, for international graduates if applicable
  • your visa documents, if applicable.

How to apply

You need to apply for an internship through the online portal. The portal is only open during the application period. If you need help using the portal, read the application portal user manual [PDF 3082.09 KB].

You’ll need to register to apply. If you’re a previous applicant, you don’t need to register again. Use your login details from last year to start your new application.

When filling out your application, you’ll need to preference all participating hospitals from highest to lowest with 1 being the most preferred.

Once you submit your application, you can make changes to it. Before the closing date you can edit all information. After the closing date, you can only edit the following:

  • your contact details
  • your unique identifier number
  • your referee details
  • some documents you uploaded before you submitted your application.

If you need to upload documents that you didn’t include when you submitted your application, you can email them to Intern-Recruitment@health.qld.gov.au. When you send them, you’ll also need to include your name and date of birth.

What happens next

Once applications close, you’ll be allocated an applicant group.

Group A

Group A applicants will get an offer of an intern position.

These are medical graduates of Queensland universities who are Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents; and either:

  • seeking an internship starting in the year of, or immediately following graduation
  • have Review Committee approval from a previous campaign to defer the start of their internship.

Groups B, C and D

Group B, C and D applicants need to take part in the Hospital and Health Service suitability assessments. Each hospital has its own selection process, however they usually include shortlisting, interviews and referee checks.

Group B

These are applicants who are either medical graduates of:

  • Australian interstate or New Zealand universities who are Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents
  • Queensland universities who are Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents who do not meet the criteria outlined in group A.
Group C

These are applicants who graduated from an Australian or New Zealand university and aren’t Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents who either:

  • currently hold a visa that allows them to work in Australia
  • will need to obtain a visa to work in Australia.
Group D

These are applicants who meet either of the following.

They’re medical graduates of Australian university campuses outside of Australia accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC); or

They’re medical graduates of international universities who haven’t completed an internship in Australia or another country and have either:

  • a AMC Certificate
  • successfully completed the AMC multiple choice questionnaire.

Other applicants

If you don’t meet the criteria for Groups A, B, C or D, you may be considered at the discretion of each participating hospital.
