Queensland Health recognises that medical training is demanding and is committed to supporting the physical and mental health and wellbeing of medical practitioners across the organisation.

Since 2017, the Department of Health has ensured the opportunity for prevocational junior doctors to participate in specific wellbeing training.

Through a partnership with Mater Education Limited and in collaboration with subject matter experts, and guided by the Queensland Health Workforce Mental Health and Wellbeing Framework, the Department of Health has produced the Mind(re)set program – an online wellbeing education and training program for Queensland Health junior doctors.

Mind(re)set

Mind(re)set empowers junior doctors to proactively address mental health and wellbeing challenges. This voluntary, self-paced program aims to offer practical strategies for junior doctors through interactive activities, relatable scenarios and perspectives from both senior medical practitioners and junior doctors’ peers from within Queensland Health.

Modules of the Mind(re)set program cover:

  1. Mental Health Wellbeing and Burnout Mitigation
  2. Practicing Self-Care and Why it Matters
  3. Managing Workload Stress
  4. De-escalating conflict (Part 1) – Understanding and regulating emotional triggers
  5. De-escalating conflict (Part 2) – Communicating to de-escalate conflict

Two new modules exploring growth and advancement in the workplace and training for supervisors will be added to the Mind(re)set program in mid-2024.

Queensland Health Medical Workforce Wellbeing Reference Group

The Department also convenes the Queensland Health Medical Workforce Wellbeing Reference Group, chaired by the Chief Medical Officer, with membership including representatives from across Queensland Health, as well as external organisation.

The group works to inform organisational solutions to minimise risk, support early help-seeking behaviours, and promote a positive workplace culture that prioritises the health and wellbeing of medical practitioners and medical students.

All Queensland Health employees can access a consolidated hub of information and resources related to the five dimensions of wellbeing: mental, social, financial, physical and workplace on the Employee Wellbeing page on the Queensland Health intranet site.

Hospital and health services across Queensland also work proactively to ensure the ongoing wellbeing of medical practitioners and students through the development of local strategies and initiatives, or the engagement of specific Wellbeing Officers to support the workforce.

Employee Assistance Services (EAS)

Employee Assistance Services (EAS) provide all Queensland Health staff with resources including counselling and coaching, crisis response services and manager assistance. EAS will also assist with immediate strategies and referral to ongoing support pathways for longer term issues.
