Dual trained in dental hygiene and dental therapy, you'll provide general dental care but may also work with dentists and specialists who provide:

  • orthodontic treatment
  • specialist periodontal treatment
  • paediatric treatment
  • dental care for our vulnerable patients.

Opportunities exist for you to work in hospital, teaching or community settings but you'll do most of your work in school-based facilities. You may also work in management, health promotion, and policy development roles.

You'll consult directly with patients or children’s legal guardians to provide:

  • oral examinations, oral disease diagnosis and treatment planning
  • X-rays and other diagnostic tests
  • dental fillings
  • tooth extractions of deciduous teeth
  • cleaning, polishing and scaling
  • preventative treatments such as fissure sealants and fluoride applications
  • oral health advice, dietary counselling
  • oral health promotion and education for groups and the wider community.
