The role of radiation therapists includes:
- a diverse range of complex clinical and technical expertise
- patient management
- psychosocial patient supportive care
- clinical informatics
- radiation biology
- radiation safety.
As a radiation therapist, you'll undertake a range of activities including:
- patient assessment and education
- treatment planning (including imaging) and simulation
- patient positioning and immobilisation
- treatment by superficial megavoltage external beams.
Qualification and registration requirements
To practice as a radiation therapist in Australia, you must be registered with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia. You'll also need to have a current radiation safety license.
International qualifications
If you're a radiation therapist who qualified in another country, your qualifications will be assessed as part of the registration application process with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia.
If you have current registration in New Zealand, you may be able to apply for registration in Australia under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997.
