Orthoptists specialise in assessment, diagnosis and non-surgical management of eye disorders.
Our orthoptists work closely with ophthalmologists to care for both adults and children with eye conditions, such as:
- cataracts
- glaucoma
- diabetic eye disease
- age related macular degeneration
- strabismus (squint)
- amblyopia (lazy eye)
- double vision
- systemic or neurological vision disorders.
Qualifications
Orthoptists working in our Hospital and Health Services must:
- have a tertiary level (university) qualification in orthoptics, and
- be eligible for registration with the Australian Orthoptics Board.
If you got your qualification overseas, you must have either:
- a tertiary level qualification in orthoptics
- another orthoptic qualification recognised by the International Orthoptics Association.
The Australian Orthoptics Board will assess your qualifications for equivalency.
