As a music therapist, you’ll help people improve their health, functioning and wellbeing through interactive musical experiences.
What you’ll do
You’ll design treatment programs to help patients of all ages achieve their health goals. You’ll also use music to support patients in hospital, and help people who want to improve their:
- thinking, communication and behaviour
- mood, emotions and coping skills
- movement and physical health
- spiritual health and social connection.
Therapy may include listening to music, singing, songwriting, playing instruments and learning about music and health.
Where you’ll work
Our music therapists work in a range of health settings throughout Queensland, including:
- hospitals, health centres and pain clinics
- mental health, rehabilitation, and palliative care units
- children’s services
- community based care
- leadership, projects and management.
They’re often part of a team of health professionals from a range of disciplines.
Qualifications and skills
Music therapists working in our Hospital and Health Services must:
- have an accredited degree in music therapy
- be eligible to register with the Australian Music Therapy Association.
You’ll have training in music theory and performance, therapy models and techniques, counselling, physiology, assessment and treatment.
